Wheels of Paris – Story of Roulette

Roulette is probably one of the most popular gambling and casino games in the world. It has its origins in Paris. It is also known as the Little Wheel of Paris, as the game was founded in the gambling houses of the city. Although, it was invented in Paris in the year of 1796, most people know and understand it as the American Roulette wheel.

After almost 50 years, Europeans adopted and adapted the wheel to suit their tastes and changed its layout. It now features a single green zero unlike its Amoerican counterpart, which comes with two zeros instead of one.

Over the course of time, the European version of the roulette grew in popularity in the rest of the world except America. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the roulette came into its own. The reason was its much publicized adoption by the famous Monte Carlo casino that was frequented by top gamblers of the time. Monte Carlo casino however chose to adopt the single zero format of the European version which further fueled its popularity.

Another form of roulette originated in Russia in the early 19th century known as the Russian roulette. Although most gamblers like to stay away from this form, as it involves a real gun with one bullet and 5 empty chambers. Participants are then supposed place the revolver on their own head and press the trigger. Whoever dies first loses, and this is precisely why it is not very popular. There have been several incidents where people actually died playing and participating in the game of Russian roulette.

Russian roulette has also been portrayed and depicted widely in popular cinema and Hollywood movies where actors under various avatars played the game. In the coming posts, you will learn about the origins of poker.
